Vaccinations are the single most important health investment you can make for your puppy. In India, where diseases like Parvo and Distemper remain common, following the correct vaccination schedule can literally save your puppy's life.

This guide follows the vaccination protocol recommended by the Indian Veterinary Association and is reviewed by our veterinary team.

6-8 weeks: First round

Your puppy should receive their first DHPP vaccine (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza) at 6-8 weeks. This is when maternal antibodies start to fade and your puppy becomes vulnerable. Many breeders administer this before handover, but always verify with your vet.

10-12 weeks: Second round

The second DHPP booster is critical a single dose is not enough for full immunity. At this stage, your vet may also recommend the Leptospirosis vaccine, which is particularly important in Indian cities during monsoon season when standing water increases infection risk.

14-16 weeks: Third round + Rabies

The third DHPP booster completes the core vaccination series. This is also when your puppy should receive their first Rabies vaccine. Rabies vaccination is legally mandatory in India under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act.

Optional but recommended vaccines

  • Kennel Cough (Bordetella) essential if your dog will be boarded, groomed, or around other dogs
  • Canine Influenza recommended for dogs in high-density urban areas
  • Lyme Disease recommended if you live near wooded or rural areas

Annual boosters

After the initial puppy series, your dog needs annual boosters for DHPP and Rabies. Some vets now recommend triennial (every 3 years) core vaccines for adult dogs, but Rabies should remain annual in India due to prevalence.

Vaccination costs in India

Core puppy vaccines typically cost ₹500-₹1,500 per dose at private clinics. The Rabies vaccine is often available free at government veterinary hospitals. A complete puppy vaccination series (6 weeks to 16 weeks) costs approximately ₹3,000-₹6,000 total at private clinics.

Tracking vaccinations digitally

Lost vaccination cards are a common problem. FirstPaww's Health Passport stores all vaccination records digitally accessible from any clinic, any city. When you visit a new vet, they can instantly see your pet's complete vaccination history.
